Review your own profile first
A Telegram username can let someone contact you without first knowing your phone number. That does not make the rest of your account invisible. Review your display name, profile photo and phone-number privacy settings before starting an unfamiliar conversation.
People who already have your number saved may be able to identify you. Use Telegram’s current Privacy and Security settings to check who can see your number, find you by it and view other profile information.
Ordinary chats and Secret Chats differ
Telegram describes its ordinary conversations as cloud chats. Its Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption and are tied to the devices involved. Opening a username from this directory does not automatically create a Secret Chat.
Encryption does not stop the person at the other end from retaining or sharing what they receive. Choose what you disclose based on that practical limit, rather than assuming any messenger can guarantee confidentiality.
Keep account access and personal details separate
Do not share login codes, passwords, recovery details, identity documents or banking access in order to start a conversation. Be cautious with unexpected files and links. No directory listing needs control of your account.
Check the official Telegram FAQ when changing privacy settings because menus and capabilities can change. You can stop a conversation, block an account or use the reporting tools in the messenger.
- Review phone-number visibility.
- Check the exact destination username.
- Keep work, home and account-recovery details private.
